VO School: Launch

My name is Jamie, I'm based in the Philadelphia region of the US. I began my voiceover journey over 13 years ago and have been in audio production for over 20.

In that time I've had the privilege of working on some incredible projects. I've voiced for many of the worlds biggest companies, production houses, Film/TV studios and video game developers. But the journey to where I am now has been long and often circuitous. Throughout the past 13 years I've learned a huge amount about what works, what doesn't, where I should be spending my time, effort and money, and how to achieve my goals.

Even though failure, rejection and disappointment are certainly an inevitable part of growing a voiceover career, there are many pitfalls that can be avoided with guidance, and productive steps that can help a talent to achieve their full potential.

I started the VO School Podcast five years ago as a response to the vast amount of misinformation leading new talent astray - predatory coaches, sub par demo services and so-called 'industry experts' who exploit new talent's lack of experience. I wanted to create a free resource and give new talent the basic information they need to enter this industry with their eyes open.

I'm extremely proud of the podcast and humbled that so many respected industry practitioners continue to lend their time and considerable expertise to the project, and I plan on continuing as long as there are voiceover subjects to explore!

Before voiceover I taught music and I found teaching hugely rewarding. Therefore it has felt very natural to combine my work with the podcast, my workshops and my co-chairing of the VOcation voiceover conference, to provide specific coaching for those looking to explore voiceover and offer an introduction to the industry as well as assessment and plan setting for aspiring voice talent.

I am a first and foremost a working voice actor. Check out some of my projects.
There are many questions to answer when you begin your voiceover journey: Is this something that I would enjoy? How does this industry work? Am I able to do what it takes to succeed? Can I set up a studio in my home? Am I any good at this?...

If you're looking for an honest assessment of your unique situation and skills with an unbiased, customized plan for your first year in this industry, this coaching was made specifically for you!

It works like this:

The first session is an initial assessment where we talk about your reasons for choosing voiceover, your life situation and your ambitions. I introduce you to how the voiceover industry operates today, and how you may find a place for yourself within it.

We also spend some time reading a couple of short commercial scripts (you'll have these in advance). This gives you a stress-free introduction to voicing and being directed. This is not a test, it is an opportunity to play and experiment, but it does give me some valuable information that will help me to give you a custom plan for your next steps.

Speaking of Next Steps

I may send you away for some weeks or months to do personal study (books, podcasts, blogs etc...), and/or task you with specific steps to complete before the next session. This could be performance, business or technical in nature, or any combination of them.

After two or three sessions, I will give you a practical plan for your short, medium and long term. This could be kicking off your career, working with other coaches, continued personal study, or something particularly unique to your situation.

I'm then available for check-in/tune-up classes when you feel the need to move things forward in your career.

I started the VO School Podcast to redress the balance of misinformation in our industry, and it’s been a thrill and a privilege to hear that so many listeners have benefited from the knowledge shared! But the reality is that everyone’s path through the industry is unique and requires customized coaching. Coaching allows me to work individually with committed and passionate talent who are looking to break into this industry.

I’ve been a champion of truth in voiceover for a number of years and I take this ethos into my lessons. I’m honest about my thoughts on the industry, a voice talent's abilities, the realities of their expectations and where I see the business as a whole is heading.
